The word “paper” comes from the Greek word “Papuros”.
The ancient Egyptians pounded parts of the stems of papyrus plants then placed them in layers, criss-crossing each other in the muddy water from the River Nile. The papyrus was then pressed and then left in the sun to dry.
The Chinese discovered how to make paper as we know it today and the Japanese turned papermaking into a highly skilled craft.
Paper used to be made mainly from rags until machine made paper meant there were not enough rags. It was then discovered that fibres from wood such as spruce, pine and fir could be used to make a greater range of paper cheaply.
During my papermaking workshop we will look at recycling old newspapers into pulp and adding other ingredients to create a range of papers. I will explain and demonstrate how to make the pulp and show how to make your own screen from an old picture frame and net.
By the end of the day everyone will have produced plain sheets of paper, together with paper with lavender, rose petals and glitter.
For anyone who enjoys card making, this is a good opportunity to build up a stock of inexpensive handmade paper.
